Moonlight Glass' Holiday sale will be Dec 10th and 11th.

Both days, 11am to 6pm.

hot shop. That means we get to blow glass EVERY day...finally!!

Classes are in full swing. I attached the class flyer if you want proof .

So...no more ifs, ands or buts...

For those who might want more incentive to help get their glass passions in motion, Moonlight Glass is offering it's first ever,

GLASS CLASS SPECIAL -- If you sign up and pay for class, or buy a Moonlight Glass Class gift certificate for a friend before January 1, 2012, you and/or your friend can blow glass for 3 hours in the regular 2-student class($147/student) or private class for just $147.47 total.

Dearest AWBW supporters,
This whirlwind year has been so inspirational, each and every step of the way! Last month we celebrated 20 years of creativity and healing with an "Evening of Wine Tasting and Dinner at Zazou." It was wonderful to see so many of our supporters, some who have been with us from the very beginning, joining us for this special evening.

Among the many highlights was a presentation by Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin, who read a letter from Vice President Joe Biden congratulating us on 20 years: "You have made it your mission to share your passion and drive to empower others, and you are a true example of what makes America great." (To view the letter in its entirety, click here.) You may not know this, but in 1994 Joe Biden welcomed AWBW to the Rotunda of the Russell Senate Building in Washington, DC where my Portraits of Survivors were on exhibit. At that time AWBW was reaching just 624 participants compared to the 60,000 we reach now! It feels so wonderful to have his recognition of our work and acknowledgement of how far we've come.

We couldn't have grown like this without your support. As you know, this year we set a lofty goal to raise $200,000 more than last year in order to launch 40 new programs. As you can see in this snapshot of the thermometer on our home page, we're 88% of the way there! With your support we know we can make it to 100%.

Thank you for your passion and all you do to help empower women and children surviving abuse in this very special 20th year and beyond. We're looking forward to seeing in AWBW's next decade using art as a healing tool with you!

Dear Families & Friends,

In just six short years, Get Lit has become one of Southern California's leading providers of programs devoted to teen literacy -- turning thousands of at-risk Los Angeles high school students on to the power of poetry! We wouldn't be where we are today without your generous financial support. You have helped us bring arts education to over 16,000 Los Angeles teens!!!

But we have more work to do! Current literacy statistics show that California ranks 2nd to last in the nation. Estimates put Los Angeles County high school drop out rates around 50% and state funding cuts will take an even more devastating toll on education in California where many school arts programs have been eradicated.

Get Lit is making progress in fighting against these statistics and this year we are embarking upon our most ambitious year yet by launching the first ever CLASSIC SLAM poetry event which will give teens from areas like Watts, Hollywood, the Valley, Beverly Hills, S. Angeles, Compton, Malibu, etc... the chance to share their stories and compete for poetic supremacy!

But we need to raise $75,000 to cover core operating expenses and to make this event happen! We have already secured $25,000 and I am writing to ask for your support so we can secure the remaining $50,000.

Masterpiece($2,500) -Provides 2 semester-long in-school programs

Epic($1,000) -Helps provide 1 semester-long in-school program

Sonnet($500) - Makes possible one "Get Lit Player" Performance reaching 200-1,000 students

Ballad($250) - Provides 5 after school classes for up to 30 teens (each)

Limerick($100) - Provides one all-day Get Lit workshop for 15 students

Villanelle($50) - Covers Get Lit workshop materials for 10 students

Haiku($25) - Covers Get Lit workshop materials for 5 students

Trespass Parade and Party Oct. 2 and 3

A Parade, Party, and Public Call to Action

On Sunday, October 2, 2011, the historic Broadway Theater District in Downtown Los Angeles will erupt with Trespass, a parade where artists and residents will rally together to engage in art, music, dancing, floats, community activism, and performance. The parade is just one component of Trespass – a collaborative project between Arto Lindsay, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and West of Rome Public Art (WoR) that also includes a party and a T-shirt project with call-to-action slogans.

Trespass is part of the opening weekend of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980 – a collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California, coming together for six months beginning October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene.

The parade will travel north on Broadway with rolling street closures over more than 25 blocks. Influential contemporary artists and performers will perform in and along the parade route such as Ann Magnuson. The finale includes a special KILLSONIC performance along the Grand Avenue cultural corridor with an ending reception at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) as well as at REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater). A parade map will be posted online soon.

As part of Trespass, many Los Angeles art luminaries, including John Baldessari, Barbara Kruger, Nancy Rubins, and Jeffrey Vallance, were asked to produce statements – personal calls to action expressing political or social concerns – which will be worn on T-shirts at the October 2nd parade. Many of the participating artists will also join in with performative pieces.

Trespass continues into Monday evening, October 3rd with Trespassparty, a blowout celebration at Union Station featuring interactive and musical performances by progressive artists to benefit nonprofit West of Rome.

CELEBRATING LIFE AND RESISTENCE OF THE CUBAN 5 THROUGH CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS

On June 4 the art of the incarcerated Cuban 5 patriot, Gerardo Hernandez, was inaugurated at the SPARC Gallery in Los Angeles, California in a show entitled "Humor From My Pen". The event coincided with the birthdays of Gerardo Hernandez and fellow Cuban 5 hero, Ramon Labañino and the International campaign "The 5th of each month for the Cuban 5".
The SPARC Gallery, in the old jail of the city of Venice, opened its doors on Saturday June 4th to give life to the political cartoons of Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Five Heroes of the Republic of Cuba. Hernandez created the cartoons during long years of imprisonment in maximum security prisons in the United States.

As Gerardo explained in his message to the audience "The cartoons that you are about to see were not made with the idea that some day they would be displayed all together in an art exhibit. Amongst other things, I respond continuously to hundreds of solidarity letters and I do this work lacking the material and appropriate conditions of a real artist. I am an art aficionado who draws cartoons out of necessity to express myself in a certain way. This necessity is to send out a message to our people, or to express my perspective before different events such as the birthdays of someone who we admire or the death of a friend for example. That is what has motivated the work that you will be viewing today..."

As people entered the gallery they could observe a memorial honoring renowned civil right attorney Leonard Weinglass, who was part of the legal team of the Five and who recently passed away.

The well-attended event also featured the artwork of Lalo Alcaraz, creator of the nationally syndicated daily cartoon "La Cucaracha"; Matt Wuerker, the Politico's editorial cartoonist and illustrator; Judy Baca and Emily Winters. Well known Spanish artist, and long time supporter of the Cuban 5, Paco Bernal, also contributed his work to the exhibit. Part of the exhibit was an installation piece that imitated the prison space where Gerardo created his works. Gerardo is currently serving two unjust life sentences.

The evening program included an informational panel and a section of question and answers. Suzanne Thompson, from the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 was the MC. Ms. Thompson gave a warm welcome to the public and thanked all of the individuals and organizations that made this cultural event possible.

Debra Padilla, Executive Director of SPARC gave a warm introduction to Gerardo's cartoons and expressed they were honored to offer the space for cultural expressions such as "Humor from my Pen". Alicia Jrapko, from the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5, presented an update of the case of the Cuban 5 and read a message from Gerardo Hernandez intended for the audience. Jrapko spoke of the national and international campaigns in support of the Five and invited people to join in their struggle.

Judy Baca, Artistic Director of SPARC, said that only the best cartoonist, such as Gerardo, can quickly take contemporary issues such as these and find the absurdity in them. Carol Wells, Founder and Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics, said that throughout history the struggles for justice have always had a component of artistic expressions such as graphics, illustrations and murals.

Finally, Emily Winters, co-founder of the Venice Art Council, spoke about the importance of continuing to fight and defend our cultural organizations that are under serious danger of disappearing due to the economic crisis that is affecting all sectors of community programs.

Audience sings "Happy Birthday" to Gerardo

An emotional highlight of the evening came when Gerardo called not knowing the event was still in process. Gerardo was able to briefly greet the audience and thank them for their support in the struggle to free the Cuban 5. Those in attendance spontaneously broke into a heartfelt rendition of Happy Birthday. As coincidence would have it, at that moment in walked renowned American composer and musician, Jackson Browne. Mr. Browne took the phone and greeted Gerardo and encouraged him to keep strong.

Information abouth the exhibit at SPARC was announced in the popular webpage ¡SiCuba! SoCal, where all cultural events related to Cuba in Southern California are announced. One of the other events listed is the remarkable exhibit of photographs entitled "A Revolutionary Project: Cuba from Walker Evans to Now", currently at the Getty Museum.

The announcement of the event also appeared in the Los Angeles Daily News . The Argonaut newspaper published an article about the activity including information about the case of the Cuban 5. The Argonaut covers commutities on the west side of Los Angeles and has a distribution of 90,000.

During the week that preceded the opening of the exhibit, several programs in English and Spanish on Pacifica radio station KPFK included updates of the case of the Cuban 5 in their programming and information about the opening of "Humor from my Pen". These programs included Sojourner Truth , hosted by Margaret Prescod, where actor Ed Asner and members of the International Committee were invited to participate. Asner is a co-chair of the campaign, Actors and Aritists United fro the Freedom of the Cuban 5. Other programs that covered the Five were The Lawyers Guild hosted by Jim Lafferty, Pocho Hour of Power, a program hosted by Lalo Alcaraz and Perspectiva de las Americas hosted by Raymundo Reynoso.

Also on Saturday, June 4th, host Tanya Torres of the Spanish program Cantos sin Fronteras, which reaches all the way to Gerardo's cell, read hundreds of messages that had arrived from all over the world for the occasion of Gerardo's birthday. There were many more messages than could be read in the course of the show.

The exhibit "Humor from my Pen" was organized by the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 and co-sponsored by Aris Anagnos, Joe Perez and the actors Susan Sarandon, Ed Harris and James Cromwell.

My studio will be on the Venice Art Walk this year. My friend and very talented artist, Anna Sequeiros, will be showing some of her work here at the studio as well. As always, just a couple blocks away at Westminister School, there's a silent auction with walls, tables and grounds covered with local art up for auction to raise money for the Venice Clinic. Though the Art Walk is not free, the auction is, and always worth a wander through. Who knows, you might find what you've been looking for, and get to be a highest bidder!

(VENICE/May 9, 2011) The International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban Five, in conjunction with the Social Public Art Resource Center's (SPARC) 35^th Anniversary Celebration: giving voice to art makers and building cultural bridges between communities, and Honorary Committee: Actors and Artists United for the Freedom of the Cuban Five presents "Humor from my Pen", an exhibition of political cartoons by Gerardo Hernández Nordelo. The exhibit opens Saturday, June 4, and runs through Friday, June 17^th at the Old Venice Jail Gallery, 685 N. Venice Boulevard, Venice, California and includes works by Politico's editorial Cartoonist and Illustrator, Matt Wuerker; and the creator of the nationally syndicated daily cartoon "La Cucaracha", Lalo Alcaraz.

Opening night, June 4^th from 7 to 10pm, festivities include celebrating Gerardo's 46^th birthday, and panel discussion with Judy Baca, Founder/Artistic Director of SPARC, Emily Winters muralist and co-founder of the Venice Arts Council, and Carol A. Wells, Founder and Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics. Alicia Jrapko, coordinator of the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban Five will give an update on the Cuban 5. There is a suggested donation of $10 for opening night.

Humor has accompanied Gerardo Hernández Nordelo since childhood. A great sense of responsibility, and sense of humor was always part of his philosophy of life. Even in the toughest moments, he has not given up the ability to laugh at adversity. Gerardo is one of the Cuban Five political prisoners held in U.S. prisons since 1998. He is currently serving two life sentences at the U.S. Penitentiary in Victorville, California. Gerardo, Ramón Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and René Gonzalez, internationally known as the Cuban 5, were accused of conspiracy to commit espionage. The US government never accused them of actual espionage, nor did it affirm that real acts of espionage had been carried out, as no classified document had been confiscated from the Five. Their actual mission in the United States was monitoring the activities of the groups and organizations responsible for terrorist activities against Cuba.

Biography

Gerardo Hernández Nordelo was born in Havana on June 4, 1965. He graduated with a degree in International Political Relations. While in school Gerardo participated in amateur festivals as part of a theater group. He also worked as a cartoonist-humorist for Cuban publications and collectives;Palante, Melaito and Aspirina. The members of Aspirina, collectively participated in two exhibitions at the University of Havana and created a mural at Havana Cuba Pavilion. "Asprina was a great school," recalls Gerardo. "We participated in the First National Encounter of Young Comedians, where he met Carlos Ruiz de la Tejera, Virulo, Tomy and other recognized professionals. For me, who always dreamed of being a journalist, that was really exciting ... but we learned a lot, because nobody wanted to look like anyone and everyone he was shaping his own line, his own style."

Gerardo's creation of one of his most endearing characters, "Cucumber and Company", exercising vegetarian humor and constructive criticism, appeared in the tabloid The Muñe, a publication of the Editorial Pablo de la Torriente Brau. Cucumber Series USA (2002) highlights the double standards of the U.S. in its vaunted fight against terrorism and was included in the anthology of 100 years compiled by the Cuban cartoonist Cecilio Avilés. Gerardo's pen also alleged, among other things, the looting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to the underdeveloped nations. As part of his work on the capital newspaper Tribuna de La Habana, Gerardo created humorous cartoons about specific topics.

Gerardo's cartoons have been seen in various galleries in Cuba, and, recently at the VIII Congress of Cuban Journalists in the province of Las Tunas. His works are a critical look at the injustice that keeps him imprisoned along with his four comrades.

His drawings have been published since 1982 and displayed in gallery exhibitions. His book of caricatures and humor, "You Can Achieve Everything with Love and Humor" was published in 2002. Whether experiencing degrading prison conditions or solitary confinement, Gerardo keeps optimistic, with a smile and fighting spirit. Even after 13 years of incarceration, and despite the massive correspondence, arriving from the farthest corners of the world, Gerardo has not stopped making brave, highly political and humorous cartoons from his prison cell in Victorville, California.

On September 12, 1998 Gerardo, and the other four men, was arrested. He was held in preventative custody for thirty-three months before the sentence was passed and was isolated in special cell, known as "the hole", designed for prisoners with serious disciplinary problems for almost 17 months prior to the trial and for 48 days after the verdict was passed. Seven month after his arrest the U.S. government amended Gerardo's charges to include conspiracy to commit murder for the shoot down of two planes of the terrorist organization Brothers to the Rescue by the Cuban Air Force within Cuban airspace. The shoot down of the plane was a decision of the Cuban government in which Gerard had no participation.

Gerardo's trial, held at the United States District Court Southern District of Florida, under Case No. 98-721-Cr-Lenard (S), began on November 26, 2000 and concluded on June 8, 2001, in Miami, Florida, home to over half-a- million Cuban exiles. This is a community with a long history of hostility toward the Cuban government – a record that a federal appellate court in the United States later described as a "perfect storm" of prejudice, precluding a fair trial.

What the Cuban Five and their attorneys did not know during the trial was that the U.S. government—through its official propaganda agency, the Broadcasting Board of Governors—was covertly paying prominent Miami journalists who, at the same time as the government conducted its prosecution, saturated the Miami media with reports that were highly inflammatory and prejudicial to the Cuban Five. The Five were not only victims of a politically motivated prosecution, but a government-funded propaganda operation as well.

Following his conviction, on December 12, 2001 Gerardo was sentenced to two life terms plus 15 years.

Gerardo has been married since 1988 to Adriana Pérez O'Connor. His humor is present in every postcard send to his wife, who he knew at the time ofAspirina. Adriana has been denied the right to visit her husband in prison, a right that relatives of any prisoner has in the United States.

So Goes the Lincoln Ramp and So Goes the Venice United Church

The Lincoln Ramp is what locals called the skate ramp at the Venice United Methodist Church. It was brought to Venice by the church's prior [progressive] pastor Rev Tom Zeigert and the ramp owner Heidi Lemmon of Skate Park USA (SPUSA). Over the years this ramp has often been considered a safe haven for local youth to skate for free. But no more. Today the dismantling process started and the ramp is coming down completely tomorrow.

Since this newest pastor, Reverend A. Okechukwu Ogbonnaya who is a native Nigerian and a Apostolic Evangelic Fundamentalist Christian, the Venice United Methodist Church has severed any ties with the more liberal groups directly connected to the church.

They locked out the very popular and LGBT accepting youth program which consisted of local Venice at-risk youth. And they fired the Youth Coordinator, Aaron Anderson. Removing a large youth program in such a cruel fashion is something no church should do and clearly a sign that something is wrong there.

The pastor basically drove me out (I was the church Peace with Justice Coordinator among other things) and the church severed ties with the Venice Justice Committee and the Peace with Justice Pantry, which was a partnership between Venice Food Not Bombs and the church. Food Not Bombs was the main participant in this partnership.

Our pantry and Food not Bombs served well over 70,000 hot vegetarian meals and handed out tons of high quality nutritional food over the years from this location with almost no funding. The church served our Justice Committee with multiple evictions. The Justice Committee is the organization that rented an office in the church hall and was umbrella'ed by the church. It provides legal help to homeless people and works directly with NLG attorneys and Legal Aid attorneys. We
finally left this office because it was just so unfriendly and nasty that I felt like I had to have security just be in our office. Plus we were always waiting for the next eviction.

So now, last but not least, the Chair of the trustees, Patty Delli-Bovi, served Heidi Lemmon with a notice to seize abandoned property: the Lincoln Ramp and the Skate Ramp shed. I am absolutely sure Heidi was waiting for an eviction notice from this [not so nice] trustee chair person or the new pastor person. Anyone who knows anything knows Heidi did not abandon this property. Anyway, the Lincoln Ramp is going away now.

The main reason I am writing this is to let you and others know that this church is no liberal institution and they have hurt the progressive community programs that used to be connected to the church. The pastor and the chair of the trustees would like to paint us all as just a bunch of trouble makers. Yes, progressive people in
leadership roles can be troubling to fundamentalist Christians.

A formal complaint of charges were made and signed by 17 church members to the bishop who did nothing to stop this fundamentalist take over and the removal of the progressive LGBT friendly faction of the Venice United Methodist Church.

We contacted the Southern Poverty Law Center and reported the pastor as an anti-gay bigot and expressed our concern that this pastor was traveling to Uganda during the height of the religious push for the horrible gay kill bill in Uganda.

Bottom line the church needs to rent the hall or offices in the hall to pay the pastor and the church administrator because there is no congregation to speak of that provides enough tithing to support the church. They fired the janitor months ago - down to one day only (Monday night) and the bathrooms are usually filthy, especially on the weekends. Many of the tenants have left and I believe the main
large non-profit tenant left would leave except they have invested so much in the building.

If you know liberal or progressive groups and people that use the property at the Venice United Methodist Church or the adjoining Hall (the Center for Peace with Justice), I truly hope you forward this email and tell them about what has happened there.
I suppose if people really want to do something, they can contact Bishop Mary Ann Swenson at (626) 568-7300. But really up until now the bishop has done nothing more than turn it over to a district superintendent that is supporting the new pastor. Many people think there are plans to just sell the property to support the district office.

It is a shame, but progressive people and groups do not have to support this.

I tried to keep this story short, but there is so much to say. Also I thank all of the people who wrote letters asking that they do not evict us. It meant a lot to me. A lot.

In celebration of our grand move to gallery A1 from A7 in Bergamot Station, Peter Fetterman Gallery is pleased to announce two exhibitions, a selection of favorite images by photographer Elliott Erwitt in The World of Elliott Erwitt, and a series of winter images by up and coming photographer Jeffrey Conley in "Winter".

A member of the prestigious Magnum agency since 1954, Elliott Erwitt has photographed all over the world. With a keen eye, he sees beyond the tourist clichés and chronicles the charm of city life and relationships whether they be between man and woman, or man and dog. His glimpse of California in Malibu Kiss for example, captures an intimate yet delightful moment between two lovers while watching the sun set into the Pacific horizon. His New York (2000) snapshot of a man sitting with his bulldog illustrates Erwitt's witty and creative style.

"Winter" is a series of snow covered landscape images by artist Jeffrey Conley. These photographs of tranquility and beauty share with us what he has seen and experienced in his journey through nature. Featuring over 50 beautiful and compelling photographs documenting the impacts of gang violence, lack of access to good nutrition, and inadequate access to health services, this exhibition explores community health concerns shared by eight California communities, as well as concerns and strengths specific to each community.

The Venice Historical Society (VHS) has scheduled a classic slide show and lecture on movies filmed in Venice, given by well-known author and historian Marc Wanamaker, kicking off VHS's 25th Anniversary celebration for 2011.

Marc, who owns Bison Archives, is a world-class expert and consultant in film history who has worked in many facets of film production, exhibition, and research for over 35 years.

He will be talking about movies shot at various Venice locations on the canals, the lagoon, the pier & the beaches. Plus, he will be showing rare photographs from Mack Sennett comedies, Touch of Evil, Our Gang movies and many, many more classic films.

The lecture & slide show will be held at the S.P.A.R.C. (Old Venice Police Department Building), 685 Venice Boulevard, Venice, California, 90291. Free for VHS members.
$5 for non-members. Light refreshments.

Tax Tips Specifically for Artists

This timely three-hour workshop provides important information for anyone who is self-employed, but is especially geared towards artists, writers, performers, and dancers. Topics to be covered include, but are not limited to: being an employee vs. being self-employed, having a Hobby vs. having a Business, how to keep records to protect yourself in case of an audit, the difference between expenses for employees an those for self-employed people, understanding self-employment taxes and taking advantage of various deductions including entertainment, research, automobile and other expenses unique to artists.

Everyone attending will be provided with a wealth of information to take with them, including some guidelines on how to keep good records and a listing of current websites that are resources for those in business for themselves. PLEASE NOTE: This class does not cover tax issues for non-profit organizations.

Stephen Benjamin, a CPA whose clients include actors, writers, artists and other people in the entertainment industry, will teach this class. Mr. Benjamin is also an entertainer in his own right and makes the workshop fun as well as informative. He even has prizes to give out to some lucky attendees!

As a curator, art writer, art consultant, former gallery director, artist, Ashley McLean Emenegger has an in-depth knowledge and insider perspective of the Los Angeles art world. In her workshop, A. McLean will help guide visual artists through the process of preparing themselves to promote their work and develop the relationships necessary to advance their careers.

A. Mclean is an artist advisor, independent curator, art writer, and visual artist career coach. She recently launched the art consultancy firm Milo + McLean and founded McLean Fine Art in 2004. She has worked with several art institutions including the Santa Monica Museum of Art and Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena. In 2009, A. McLean served as managing editor for THE Magazine LA. As Director of Bandini Art Gallery, Culver City, A. McLean curated many of its critically recognized exhibitions. Her independent curatorial projects have been reviewed in the LA Times, Artweek, Artscene, Review Magazine, and The Huffington Post, among others. Renaissance

Venice is known for its poetry. Abbot Kinney was a big supporter of the arts, including poetry. In the 1950s, the Beats found a home in Venice. Poets including Stuart Perkoff, Tony Scibella, Frank T. Rios, James Ryan Morris, Shanna Moore, Aya, John Thomas, John Haag, William Margolis, Saul White, Lawrence Lipton, and later, Philomene Long, began writing poetry that has stood the test of time. Another notable Venice poet was Jim Morrison.

Now, a new generation of Venice poets is in its prime. While each one differs from his/her colleagues, all share a love for their community, the sea and the people. This is the first gathering in a long while of exclusively Venice poets under one roof.

Confirmed poets and readers so far include: Karl Abrams, Linda Albertano, Lynne Bronstein, Pano Douvos, Mary Getlein, Peggy Lee Kennedy, Pegarty Long, Lydia Poncé, Krista Schwimmer, Jim Smith, Suzanne Verdal, RF Wagner.

Come and enjoy this unique show.

Please note: we have postponed our yard sale and will reschedule when there's a better weather forecast and more participation of donations.

Our October restaurant fundraiser is this coming Saturday, the 23rd from 4:00 to closing at Daphne's Greek Cafe on Culver Blvd. in Culver City, next to the Pacific Theatre. I have attached two formats of the Daphne's restaurant fundraiser flyer: one in pdf, the other in jpg if you want to post it on Facebook, etc. Please attend, have some good food, support us, and share the flyer with everyone! Our next restaurant fundraiser will be at Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill on Wednesday, November 17th from 5:00 to closing. It will be at both the MDR and The Bridge locations.The flyer for Rubio's will be sent in a of couple weeks.

Our Silent Auction fundraiser is Novermber 6th during the Alumni Association's Honoree Dinner. This Gala Event is quickly approaching! Attached is the invitation. We plan on posting the catalog of items on our website. This will not be a live online auction but it will alllow people that are far away or can't make it to the Gala a chance to bid. If you would like to attend the Silent Auction but not the dinner, you are welcome to come at 8:00 p.m. The auction tables will close at 9:00. The DJ and dancing will continue until 1:00 a.m.

We have a wonderful assortment of items, restaurant gift cards and services to auction however we are still accepting imore. I have attached two versions of the silent auction donation request: one in Word format if you want to personalize it and the other in pdf, which can be used "as is". Please ask your local merchants, restaurants, friends and neighbors for donations. Web 2.0 Taking Your On-Line Marketing to the Next Level

Social networking tools are changing how we interact with friends, colleagues and customers. The tools are changing monthly, if not weekly. In this 2-session workshop we will decipher the complex new world of Web 2.0 technologies and social networking as well as explore new ways that artists can use these tools to expand their audience, increase their awareness and grow their arts business.

Topics discussed include:

Wordpress and other blog/website templates
Social networking sites like Facebook
Social bookmarking such as Delicious
Twitter
Paypal and selling online,
Managing an email list and creating professional looking email blasts for cheap
Online art communities
Flickr, Vimeo, YouTube and other content-sharing sites
Self-publishing tools such as Lulu and Blurb

During the first session, key topics will be introduced with an overview of specific tips and approaches. In the second session, we will review and discuss some of the tactics that you have set up outside of the class, as well as covering additional approaches. NOTE: This workshop requires you to do work outside of class. Workshop time will not be devoted to creating specific tools.

Students may bring their own laptop to class but it is not a requirement. Computers will not be provided.

D. Jean Hester is the owner of Dive Studios, and an artist with an MFA in Art and Integrated Media from the California Institute of the Arts. She has over 12 years experience working in the web, while employed as a web programmer for Jet Propulsion Lab, Toyota, and other large corporations located in California. Currently she also teaches web design and web programming full-time at Art Institute of Orange County, and has acquired an extensive body of knowledge about marketing on the web. She is an early graduate of "Business of Art" and has been teaching "Marketing on the Web for Artists and Arts Organizations" for over three years.

Grant Strategies for Individual Artists:
Positioning Yourself in a Crowded Environment

Now, more than ever, artists are looking for grant opportunities to support their artistic endeavors. This 3 - hour workshop will discuss important strategies for grant-seeking artists and provide you with tips for creating a competitive grant application. Using the CCI Investing in Artists application as a model we will explore the subject from the funder perspective and discuss content, artistic samples and important principles.

Elisa Callow is founding director of the Armory Center for the Arts. During her tenure, the Armory became a national model for excellence in community arts program development and the budget increased from $200,00 to over $2 million. Elisa worked in the philanthropic sector for four years, first as Program Officer for the Ahmanson Foundation and then as Arts Program Director for the James Irvine Foundation. Her most recent professional experience has been as a management consultant working with organizations in the nonprofit sector on strategic issues as they relate to program development, audience and market issues, organizational design and planning and evaluation. Clients include: The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, About Productions, The Pacific Asia Museum, The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, The San Francisco Symphony, and The Auckland War Memorial Museum. She has been a mentor for the Durfee Foundation's Springboard Fund and is a Graduate student advisor for the Bank Street College. Elisa has also served on the Boards of a number of arts, environmental, and education organizations. She is currently a Board member of the Ojai Music Festival, the Rowe and Gayle Giesen Trust and an Advisory Board member of Pasadena Conservatory of Music.

The Wise Use of Credit

You know your numbers: age, show size, height. But what about ypu credit score?

This number can have a big impact on how much you pay for a car, a home or even what kind of job you might get. You will learn how to manage your credit wisely which will help secure your financial position in the future.

This workshop is presented in conjunction with Clear Point Credit Counseling Solutions, a member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), a system-wide accredited business with the Council of Better Business Bureaus, a Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-approved housing counseling agency and accredited by the Council of Accreditation. Their mission is consumer health through financial education.

VENICE STREET CORNER, USED FOR GATHERING U.S. CITIZENS ORDERED TO INTERNMENT CAMPS IN 1942, TO BECOME JAPANESE AMERICAN MEMORIAL SITE.

        On September 11, 2010 former Manzanar internees and their families along with community leaders, elected officials, educators, historians and concerned citizens will meet at the Venice Hongwanji Budhist Temple* from 2:00 PM -5:00 PM in West Los Angeles to discuss the appearance and scope of the Venice Japanese American Memorial Marker (VJAMM).

          This meeting will be facilitated by the Venice Japanese American Memorial Marker "VJAMM" Committee, an ad hoc group comprised of former internees, and concerned citizens whose goal is to erect a memorial for the purpose of honoring Venice-area Americans of Japanese descent who were ordered, per the US Government's "Civil Exclusion Orders," to abandon their homes, business and possessions and then, although having committed no crime, were imprisoned.

          The proposed site for this memorial, 933 ½ Venice Boulevard, is the address of the former "Civil Control Station" where, in April of 1942, local residents reported and then boarded buses to the Manzanar War Relocation Authority Camp where they would spend the next three years of their lives. While most Venice residents remain unaware of the role this heavily traveled intersection played in the lives of many of their former and current neighbors, the spot is one that continues to affect the lives of those ordered there almost seventy years ago, including Arnold Maeda of Santa Monica: "I have such a personal connection to this corner, and I always point out this location to any of my passengers as we drive by. I always have had a very visceral, emotional response to even thinking about my incarceration. But with discussion of this marker, my negative feelings have somehow dissipated and have been replaced with feelings of hope.

          The VJAMM has already received the support of District 11 Councilman Bill Rosendahl who filed a motion before the Los Angeles City Council that the Bureau of Street Services, Planning Department and Department of Transportation "be directed to report with recommendations for the installation of a commemorative marker at the northwest corner of Venice and Lincoln Boulevards to commemorate the start of the internment of hundreds of Japanese and Japanese Americans living in the Venice community."

          Other supporters include: Beyond Baroque, Free Venice Beachhead, Nikkei Student Union at UCLA, Japanese American Citizens League (Culver-Venice Chapter), Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC), Venice Arts Council, Venice Community Housing Corporation, Venice High School Alumni Association, Venice High School New Media Academy students, Venice Historical Society, Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, Venice Japanese Community Center, Venice Neighborhood Council, Venice Peace and Freedom Party, Venice Town Council, Nikkei Student Union at UCLA.
