CODE PINK and Women's Peace Walk.

May 31, 2012

Dear Friend,

Happy Summer! CODEPINK is ready to burst onto the summer scene with some great events and actions, and we want you involved!

Medea Benjamin will be in town on her booktour for "Drones:Killing by Remote Control".

Come to one of our events to see Medea and learn more about the travesty of drones. You can join Medea & Jodie for an intimate afternoon tea on June 16th.

We're also hosting a community gathering, along with a bunch of our friends, later that evening, where Medea will be interviewed by TruthDig's Bob Scheer.

Also, join Jodie this Saturday, June 2nd, for the GLA-UN Women's Peace Walk at 2pm at Wilshire Blvd. & Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica. This is answering Julia Ward Howe's call for women to gather on June 2nd annually to raise their voices against war.

Let Jodie know if you will be joining her.

Bring your pink and join us at these events! We'd love to see you!

Onward,
Jodie, Medea, Holly, Patricia and Magda

Fwd: Mural Installation by Jesse Hazelip & Pop-up Show - This Sunday!

VENICE ARTWALK SPECIAL EVENTS: Mural & Pop-up Exhibition
Sunday, May 20; 11am - 5pm
C.A.V.E. GALLERY & THE RED FORT Present:
A Mural Installation by Jesse Hazelip & Pop-Up Exhibition
This Sunday: May 20, 11am - 5pm
Heart of Oak-Venice

As part of the Annual Venice Artwalk, artist Jesse Hazelip will be installing a new mural titled, "Hearts of Oak", at The Red Fort - a Venice landmark built in 1922 - that is currently undergoing extensive restoration as artist studios. This building has hosted works by Retna, Reyes and Invader. Come watch it unfold live as part of the Art-walk tour!

In conjunction with this event, C.A.V.E. Gallery has curated a special Pop-Up exhibition at the Red Fort, with proceeds benefiting Venice Family Clinic. This exhibit will showcase an exciting vanguard of artists representative of the fresh talent of the New Contemporary Art movement. Participating artists include: Jesse Hazelip, Kid Acne, BAYO, Jason Hernandez, EATCHO, Radical!, Taka Sudo, Sophie Bastien, CRAWW, Paul Chatem, Young Chun & Zach Johnsen.

Local artist Maria Ziman will also have her beautiful artwork exploring organic forms on exhibit in the adjoining artist studio.

THE RED FORT is located at 901 Pacific Ave, Venice (Cross street Brooks Ave).

ARTIST STATEMENT FOR "HEARTS OF OAK" - MURAL BY JESSE HAZELIP
"The term 'Bailout' has become a household term amongst the American people who lost their jobs, their homes and their savings to the crooks on Wall Street whose wrongdoings were answered with government charity instead of penance.

The mural, titled "Hearts of Oak" (Cockney slang for broke), will depict an aggrandized and inflated version of the pig to represent the excess and gluttony of Wall Street. The pig is being chauffeured in an ornately gilt vessel on the back of the bull, which I use as metaphor for the working class. Adorned with blinders and the bondage of a service animal (slave), the horns have been rendered useless leaving the bull vulnerable without any form of defense. My viewpoint is that the working class has suffered greatly, having carried the burden throughout the financial crisis while the leaders of financial institutions continue to profit.

Through an intentional use of recognizable imagery, I create dialogue with a wide range of viewers. This decision is influenced and inspired by George Orwell's book 1984, and the theory in the book that the hope for the nation is with the proletariat."
