Venice is known for its poetry. Abbot Kinney was a big supporter of the arts, including poetry. In the 1950s, the Beats found a home in Venice. Poets including Stuart Perkoff, Tony Scibella, Frank T. Rios, James Ryan Morris, Shanna Moore, Aya, John Thomas, John Haag, William Margolis, Saul White, Lawrence Lipton, and later, Philomene Long, began writing poetry that has stood the test of time. Another notable Venice poet was Jim Morrison.

Now, a new generation of Venice poets is in its prime. While each one differs from his/her colleagues, all share a love for their community, the sea and the people. This is the first gathering in a long while of exclusively Venice poets under one roof.

Confirmed poets and readers so far include: Karl Abrams, Linda Albertano, Lynne Bronstein, Pano Douvos, Mary Getlein, Peggy Lee Kennedy, Pegarty Long, Lydia Poncé, Krista Schwimmer, Jim Smith, Suzanne Verdal, RF Wagner.

Live from the Starving Ear is 90 minutes of wickedly inventive satirical songs.  The Tea Party, the economy, same-sex marriage, Rush Limbaugh, Creationism, guns, taxes, abstinence and yes, Barack Obama all come under musical scrutiny.  "There's a whole new political  "There's a whole new political landscape," says Roy, "painted by Jackson Pollock."  The Starving Ear is Roy's homage to San Francisco's legendary nightclub the hungry i, and name of his new series on YouTube.

Tuesday, December 7th, 7:30-9:30pm Venice Arts is pleased to partner with OPEN SHOW, a free monthly event that provides photographers, filmmakers and multimedia producers the chance to present their work in high-profile spaces.   Five curated presenters have 10 minutes each to introduce one project. Come participate in this interactive salon exploring diverse bodies of work, ranging from documentary to fine art, and mix and mingle with the photographers during a potluck-style reception.* *Starter drinks and food are provided, but Open Show is potluck style, so please bring your favorite beverage, finger food or donation.
