Steve Harvey, a free-lance writer, worked for the Los  Angeles Times for 40 years,
as a reporter and as the "Only in L.A."  columnist. He still writes "Then and Now"
historical pieces (such as one  about Venice's short-lived nude beach) for The Times,
as well as a humorous  football column "The Bottom Ten."

Hello Fellow Supporters of our Great Centennial Celebration and Friends of Venice High School!
  
Please note: we have postponed our yard sale and will reschedule when there's a better weather forecast and more participation of donations.
 
Our October restaurant fundraiser is this coming Saturday, the 23rd from 4:00 to closing at Daphne's Greek Cafe on Culver Blvd. in Culver City, next to the Pacific Theatre. I have attached two formats of the Daphne's restaurant fundraiser flyer: one in pdf, the other in jpg if you want to post it on Facebook, etc. Please attend, have some good food, support us, and share the flyer with everyone! Our next restaurant fundraiser will be at Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill on Wednesday, November 17th from 5:00 to closing. It will be at both the MDR and The Bridge locations.The flyer for Rubio's will be sent in a of couple weeks.
 
Our Silent Auction fundraiser is Novermber 6th during the Alumni Association's Honoree Dinner. This Gala Event is quickly approaching! Attached is the invitation. We plan on posting the catalog of items on our website. This will not be a live online auction but it will alllow people that are far away or can't make it to the Gala a chance to bid. If you would like to attend the Silent Auction but not the dinner, you are welcome to come at 8:00 p.m. The auction tables will close at 9:00. The DJ and dancing will continue until 1:00 a.m.
 
We have a wonderful assortment of items, restaurant gift cards and services to auction however we are still accepting imore. I have attached two versions of the silent auction donation request: one in Word format if you want to personalize it and the other in pdf, which can be used "as is". Please ask your local merchants, restaurants, friends and neighbors for donations. When you get their donation, please be sure to get their contact information and a value of the donated item(s) so that we can send them a thank you letter/receipt for their tax deductible donation. All donations can be dropped off at Carolyn and Nanette's house: 12501 Stanwood Place, Mar Vista. Please call first: (310) 397-4341. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Web 2.0  Taking Your On-Line Marketing to the Next Level
 
Social networking tools are changing how we interact with friends, colleagues and customers. The tools are changing monthly, if not weekly. In this 2-session workshop we will decipher the complex new world of Web 2.0 technologies and social networking as well as explore new ways that artists can use these tools to expand their audience, increase their awareness and grow their arts business.
 
Topics discussed include:

  • Wordpress and other blog/website templates
  • Social networking sites like Facebook
  • Social bookmarking such as Delicious
  • Twitter
  • Paypal and selling online,
  • Managing an email list and creating professional looking email blasts for cheap
  • Online art communities
  • Flickr, Vimeo, YouTube and other content-sharing sites
  • Self-publishing tools such as Lulu and Blurb

During the first session, key topics will be introduced with an overview of specific tips and approaches. In the second session, we will review and discuss some of the tactics that you have set up outside of the class, as well as covering additional approaches. NOTE: This workshop requires you to do work outside of class. Workshop time will not be devoted to creating specific tools.
 
Students may bring their own laptop to class but it is not a requirement. Computers will not be provided.
 
D. Jean Hester is the owner of Dive Studios, and an artist with an MFA in Art and Integrated Media from the California Institute of the Arts. She has over 12 years experience working in the web, while employed as a web programmer for Jet Propulsion Lab, Toyota, and other large corporations located in California. Currently she also teaches web design and web programming full-time at Art Institute of Orange County, and has acquired an extensive body of knowledge about marketing on the web. She is an early graduate of "Business of Art" and has been teaching "Marketing on the Web for Artists and Arts Organizations" for over three years.

Grant Strategies for Individual Artists:
Positioning Yourself in a Crowded Environment

Now, more than ever, artists are looking for grant opportunities to support their artistic endeavors. This 3 - hour workshop will discuss important strategies for  grant-seeking artists and provide you with tips for creating a competitive grant application. Using the CCI Investing in Artists application as a model we will explore the subject from the funder perspective and discuss content, artistic samples and important principles.
 
Elisa Callow is founding director of the Armory Center for the Arts.  During her tenure, the Armory became a national model for excellence in community arts program development and the budget increased from $200,00 to over $2 million.  Elisa worked in the philanthropic sector for four years, first as Program Officer for the Ahmanson Foundation and then as Arts Program Director for the James Irvine Foundation. Her most recent professional experience has been as a management consultant working with organizations in the nonprofit sector on strategic issues as they relate to program development, audience and market issues, organizational design and planning and evaluation. Clients include: The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County,  About Productions, The Pacific Asia Museum, The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, The San Francisco Symphony, and The Auckland War Memorial Museum. She has been a mentor for the Durfee Foundation's Springboard Fund and is a Graduate student advisor for the Bank Street College. Elisa has also served on the Boards of a number of arts, environmental, and education organizations. She is currently a Board member of the  Ojai Music Festival, the Rowe and Gayle Giesen Trust and an Advisory Board member of Pasadena Conservatory of Music.

Learning The Fundamentals

Understanding financial basics are key for both your personal life and professional career. With a clear understanding of your financial situation, you can make more knowledgeable choices regarding your artistic career. This workshop will include two important topics: Budgeting and The Wise Use of Credit
 
Budgeting  
Where does your money go? Step one in budgeting is tracking expenses but there is a lot more involved in planning a financial future. You will learn how to create a personal budget to help achieve short and long-term financial goals.  
 
The Wise Use of Credit
You know your numbers: age, show size, height. But what about ypu credit score?
This number can have a big impact on how much you pay for a car, a home or even what kind of job you might get. You will learn how to manage your credit wisely which will help secure your financial position in the future.   
 
This workshop is presented in conjunction with Clear Point Credit Counseling Solutions, a member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), a system-wide accredited business with the Council of Better Business Bureaus, a Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-approved housing counseling agency and accredited by the Council of Accreditation. Their mission is consumer health through financial education.

The Venice High School Centennial Committee is having a FUNdraiser yard sale in just over 3 weeks. We are collecting items and we are asking for your help.

This is a great time to clean out your garage or do some Spring cleaning in the Summer heat of Fall to make room for the Winter holidays.
