Experience Live theatre this Friday, Nov 27th

I (Kathy Leonardo) am helping to publicize an incredible play called
Mercy Warren's Tea opening this Friday November 27th at 8:00 pm, the
day after Thanksgiving at the Odyssey Theatre (2055 S. Sepulveda, LA
CA 90025). You will be hearing about it on KCRW, KPFK and other
stations. I have also included some links below for more info. There
will be a fabulous opening party as well…..and all ticket holders for
this Friday's performance are invited to attend.

Written by Jovanka Bach, Mercy Warren's Tea was the winner of the
American Public Radio Drama award and is being produced and directed
by John Stark. This exhilarating play focuses on the life of Mercy
Otis Warren (1728-1814), America's first woman playwright and
historian. Warren secretly authored anti-British plays that sparked
Revolutionary sentiment.   (Gotta love that strong woman)

To help commemorate this special opening, Nancy Rubin, author of the
book "The Secret Pen of Mercy Otis Warren, The Muse of the Revolution"
has agreed to be a part of this wonderful event and will be on hand to
sign books on opening night.

Tickets are only $18.00 and if you are a student, senior or a member
of an entertainment union…discounted tickets of $10.00 are available.
Call the box office 310 477-2055 now to make sure to reserve your
ticket.    It runs through Dec 20th.

So after a full day of eating on Thanksgiving, come enjoy some
theatrical nourishment as well as the chance to mingle with talented
actors and John Stark, the director and producer of "Mercy Warren's
Tea" at an exclusive party….there's nothing like "opening night" at
the theatre.

I'll be there….hope to see you too. …..see links below.   Have a
beautiful Thanksgiving!

Darwin's Universe

"... the single best volume ever published that covers all matters Darwinian from A to Z. I have never so enjoyed a scientific book, plucking out gems of elegant narrative richly supported by photographs and paintings from the history of evolutionary thought. A magnificent product of scholarship that is also a work of art." --  Michael Shermer, Editor of Skeptics Magazine, author of In Darwin's Shadow and Why Darwin Matters

Fwd: Being Bold

This is the second in an occasional series from Venice Arts' year-long project, What's Your Story.

CHAPTER 02 : ALEX

Alex Self Port"Whatever you can do or dream, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it."
- Goethe

When I read this quote on 17-year-old Alex's blog, it reminded me of her self-portrait (left). I was also struck by how apt it must have been during some very trying times in her life. To be bold enough to begin, let alone to persevere, is not easy for any one at any age. But Alex has done both.

Alex describes herself as "a reluctant Eskimo, devoted aunt, skilled liar,
French learner, bookworm, dictionary reader, shopping-hater, sometimes writer, nature lover, and mostly photographer."

alex college tourI first met Alex when she enrolled in a photo class at Venice Arts 5 years ago; we were soon joking that she practically lived here. She took 3 classes a week; assisted in the gallery, film program, and darkroom; mentored other youth; made an independent film with her friends; joinedAdvanced Studies; and became one of our first paid interns. In fact, we created a special intern slot just for her that she filled for nearly 3 years. Before she left, her mentor, Joanne, took her on a college tour(Alex in the Bay Area with Polaroid camera, right).

In August, Alex moved to Alaska to live with her sister. Blogging from Alaska, she says, "I have yet to spot a gallery or hear anyone talk passionately about art. I am making up for this by running a fake gallery for my accounting class. I have to thank everyone at Venice Arts... (because) my teacher thinks I'm some business genius. I know what my expenses are and my target demographic. FYI, the gallery is called Mixed Up Media Gallery."

I asked Alex to allow you to follow her story from Alaska through her photos and blogs. She's agreed, so check back often or subscribe to Alex' story here to be notified each time she posts. We'll also be posting a new piece-featuring her photos and an audio interview-in a couple of weeks.

During this giving season, we have set a goal to raise $10,000 for our Advanced Studies program, from which Alex graduated. This will support 6 low-income teens for a full-year in workshops, internships, 1:1 mentoring, assistance with portfolio development and college applications, and much, much more. Not a lot of money for a lot of impact.

Please help us to make this goal. Be bold.
It doesn't matter if you give $25 or $2,500; what matters is that you give at a level that is meaningful to you. Please, contribute online, today.

As always, many thanks for your support!
