Public Art and the Venice Art Walls – Cultural Affairs Commission, June 4th 1:30PM

Stash Maleski to Present to the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Commission on Public Art and the Venice Art Walls – June 4, 2009 1:30 PM

I would like to invite you to attend the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Commission meeting on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 1:30 PM.  My presentation will explore creative ways the City might help provide space for murals on public property in light of the current ban on fine art murals on private property.  I will focus the discussion on the Venice Art Walls program as a model of how public/private partnerships can provide artists with valuable cultural services and resources during difficult financial times.

We will be discussing other innovative ideas and programs that use art to beautify the city while promoting artistic expression, civic engagement and a sense of civic pride and responsibility. While no new permits are being issued for fine art murals on private property, it is still possible to get a per mit to paint a mural on city, state or federal property.  It makes sense that while the private property issues are being resolved, that public space be opened up to artists.  How can we encourage this?

I welcome your support at this meeting as well as your feedback and creative ideas.  There will be a short discussion, and guests will be invited to comment on the presentation.

New Plan for Resolving Permit Issues for Mural on Private Property

Also at this meeting, I believe Al Nodal, President of the Cultural Affairs Commission, will be discussing a new plan to address the issue of legalizing fine art murals on private property in the City of Los Angeles.

Meeting Location:

Department of Cultural Affairs

Boardroom (14th Floor)

201 North Figueroa Street, Suite 1400 (between W. 1st Street and W. Temple Street)

Los Angeles, CA 90012 (213) 202-5500

1:30 PM

There is relatively expensive pay parking available in the building's ground floor parking lot. There is less expensive pay parking lot on the NE corner of Figueroa and W. Temple St.

The meeting starts at 1:30PM.  You can check on the City of LA web site for the actual agenda (under CAD) when it is posted at the following link to see when the presentation will happen. < a href="http://lacity.org/lacity/SubMenu/CityMeetingsAgendas/index.htm">http://lacity.org/lacity/SubMenu/CityMeetingsAgendas/index.htm

"Suzy and Her Solid Senders teach old standards (Billie Holiday, Louis Jordan, Duke Ellington, Anita O'Day, Fats Waller)new tricks, but it's their originals that will bring you back for more." - Jazz critic Rex Butters

"Suzy's voice is vibrant and lusty...great gusto and bold emotion." - Nat Hentoff.

"If a 1940s swing-jump blues band fell into a time warp and came out in 2008, they might sound like the Solid Senders. This band has the sense of humor to make that adjustment, plus they have the chops, including an out of sight horn section, a solid rhythm section, a bandleader who also plays vibes, and an extraordinary vocalist in the person of Suzy Williams, the humorous, sensuous, song-writing local treasure that she is. Be there or be much too square." - Lynne Bronstein,=2 0SM Mirror

"Suzy Williams, whom I once called "L.A.'s Diva Deluxe" in the L.A. Weekly because of her unsurpassable position on the top shelf of red hot mamas, continues to belt standards, the blues and her originals - 24 new ones in the last year alone!  I'd also add that she's funny as hell and a heart-melting gorgeous dame." -Michael Simmons, Huffington Post, 5-08 and http:// www.laweekly.com/2008-10-30/music/music-picks-o rphics-roky-erickson-madonna/3

"Suzy is too cool. Not only does she cover music from bygone years with gusto, but she breathes new life into an aging genre with a flair few can match." - Daniel Archuleta, Santa Monica Daily Press

"What makes Suzy Williams so remarkable is her loyalty to the lyric and musical sensiblities of an age she cou ldn't be old enough to remember. She executes her ecclectic originals and incendiary interpretation s of standards recalling the 1950s Central Avenue juk e joint, jump tune, dark bar blues b ites with stylish aplomb and high octane lyrical deliverance." - Poet Michael C Ford.

"Suzy Williams is a very talented singer with a wide range who k nows how to put on an entertaining and witty show. She can sing anything from 1920's jazz and swing to blues, rock & roll and folk music. Williams' highly expressive vocals are always worth hearing." - Scott Yanow, LA Jazz Scene, April '07

L.A. WEEKLY: 10-29-08 MUSIC PICKS
http://www.laweekly.com/2008-10-30/music/music-picks-orphics-roky-erickson-madonna/3
Suzy Williams & Her Solid Senders at the Derby
Now that every yuppie with chin spinach is called a hipster, what does “hip” mean anymore? The definition of hip is a lot like the definition of art, and Suzy Williams remains the hippest dame on any block she’s struttin’. Steeped in swing and jump blues, she’s got pipes that blow straight from her heart — and elsewhere when she’s feelin’ randy (and I bet Randy don’t mind!). The Queen of Kinetic onstage, it appears as if she’s going to spontaneously combust in infinite directions at any moment. Her Solid Senders — tonight an octet including four horns — consist of L.A.’s finest, not of the oink-oink variety, but musicians with chops and edge. Special nods go to bandleader and vibraphonist Kah lil Sabbagh and Brad Kay on the 88s. Reme mber that the Derby has a dance floor, so if you’re in the mood to jitterbug out George and bump-bounce boogie in Barack, don’t forget your feet. (Michael Simmons)

COMMEMORATIVE PROJECT.

(East Los Angeles, California) On May 29, at 8 AM at Tamayo's Restaurant, 5300 Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles 90022, on what would have been his 91st birthday, Bert Corona's lifelong commitment to inspire Mexican Americans and Mexicans to become part of the American fabric will be commemorated with the dedication of a project that will immortalize his memory and his work. The Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) will announce that they, together with La Hermandad Latinoamericano and the Long Beach League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) will establish the Bert Corona Commemorative Works Project. The first phase of this three phase project will be to raise $1,000,000 for a series of murals to be painted throughout cities in California, including San Francisco, Oakland, Fresno, Los Angeles and San Diego.

Long a champion of civil rights, Bert Corona was among those who spearheaded the political struggle of Mexican Americans and Mexicans for cultural recognition and political and economic justice in the United States during the last century. It was the hard work and dedication of Mr. Corona and other dedicated men and women that would ultimately result in the election of representatives who speak and represent Mexican Americans and Mexicans in this country. Together they transformed the political landscape by their dedication and will to organize in the face of widespread racial discrimination and opposition, which resulted in the emergence of the Chicano Movement beginning in the 1960's.

The project committee has commissioned Carlos Callejo, a distinguished artist who is renowned throughout the West and Southwest for his large intricate works, to paint the first of the murals in East Los Angeles. To kickoff this project, David Lizarraga, President of TELACU, will host the breakfast at Tamayo's. Other speakers will include, State Senator Gil Cedillo, Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary- Treasurer of the Los Angeles Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, Former State Senator Richard Polanco, Former California State Assemblyman and Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alatorre, and Soledad Alatorre, Co-Director, Hermandad Mexicana Nacional.

Phase two will be the recognition of other Mexican American and Mexican heroes whose struggle made it possible for the political victories of the current generation.

Phase three will be the construction of an art center in East Los Angeles. The art center will house music, painting, dance, sculptor, and writing classes that will promote the artistic and cultural development of children residing in Greater East Los Angeles.

 My Leaf of Hope

Veronica Mendez

My picture represents the freedom I’ve longed for.  The leaf on the almost dead tree represents the hope that kept me going.  I had two children with me that needed me.  I couldn’t be a sad tree.  I never thought I could ever be the person I wanted to be, and that I had to obey to survive and  give my children a “family.”

I still fear many things, but I know now that my hope for a brighter future shines more than ever.  We are a real family now, and although many wounds still need healing, we are building wonderful, happy memories.
