LA City proposes new ordinance on murals

The joint meeting of LA City Planning and Land Use Management Committee

and Arts, Parks, Health & Aging Committee was canceled at the last
minute due to lengthy city council meeting on LA Zoo elephant
sanctuary.(that is what we were told).

The proposed ordinance modeled after the City of Portland's mural
ordinance is built around having landlords sign over a 5-year easement
to their property to the city in order to get a mural up on their wall.
( see attached staff reports/recommendations from Dept of Cultural
Affairs and Planning Dept).

Emily and Suzanne attended the meeting to request additional time to
review the staff reports and request that these recommendations be
vetted in the muralist community before action is taken. Currently, we
do not support the staff recommendations.

Please feel free to post your comments or questions.

ROY HARGROVE
LISTENING PARTY
9-10pm / giveaways!
Despite his many forays into funk and neo-soul the trumpeter Roy Hargrove has kept his hard-bop bearings.
There are a number of possible reasons to suspect him of a conservative streak, and “Earfood,” his new album,
lays out a few for inspection.

The sound of the record, bright and crisp, attests to a classic jazz ideal. Then there’s the feel of a tightly
bonded group that keeps its hierarchy clear. And in the liner notes Mr. Hargrove declares that he aims to
please, with simple melodies and a product “steeped in tradition and sophistication.” He has a secondary
title for the album, “Sound Nutrition,” indicating that this stuff is also supposed to be good for you.

11/11- Help Spread Peace Worldwide!! - please forward to family and friends...

Dear Friends,

On this day, 11/11/08, a day that many people are observing as a remembrance to fallen veterans and an opportunity to envision global unity, Luminous Family Productions is pleased to offer a contribution to the world peace movement by announcing the online debut of Luminaries' music video, "Peace," as well as the availability of the audio single on iTunes.

We feel that in releasing this song today and promoting the concept of "peace worldwide starts from inside," we are helping to provide a solution to the blight of war by empowering each of us to create peace within, and to bring that peace to our relationships with family, community, and society.  We are all one and must seize this truth in order to thrive on Earth.

The version of "Peace" currently up on YouTube is the award-winning original cut from the 2008 Elevate Film Festival, but will only be available for a short time.  Next week we will release the full-length, recolorized, high definition version on LuminariesMusic.Com, as well as YouTube, so see the instant classic, and stay tuned for the next level!!

To help internalize and spread the message of peace, we are asking for your simple participation:

1.      Tonight, before you go to sleep, take a few moments and contemplate how you can create peace in your life.  Tune in to the infinite power of love within you and reflect it out to all those who need it.  Watch how it comes back to you tomorrow ;)

2.      Forward this email out to your community of loved ones and invite them to participate in the creation of peace.  In the popular sentiment of the moment, "Yes, We Can!"

Thank you for your time and know that you are loved in every moment,

Luminaries

Parlor Performances @ Steinway Hall presents

An Evening with Chanteuse Dangereuse Joyce Aimee
Accompanied by piano and Joyce's Musette Accordion!

Friday, November 14 at 8pm * $25

Dubbed the Chanteuse Dangereuse by Josephine Baker at NY's Hotel Pierre in 1962, Joyce has been performing since age three -- entertaining and recording nationally and internationally -- accompanying herself with her Musette accordion. Recently, she enjoyed several sold out appearances at the Gardenia about which the late Mr. Blackwell wrote: "Pure magic! She looked absolutely fabulous and had us all mesmerized with her inimitable charm and husky voice. A rare and magnificent performer that has the ability to tell life's stories through song."

Born of a French mother and Russian father, Joyce has a gypsy in her soul, as her wanderlust attests. Joyce managed and produced the American Folk Ballet for 25 years and also managed Agnes DeMille. She served 15 years as Commissioner of the Arts in LA County. Don't miss a wonderful evening of songs and stories -- a very special evening with an outstanding entertainer. More about Joyce:
www.aimeeentertainment.com/aimee.htm

An Evening of Music & Comedy with Ronnie Jayne & Darryl Henriques
Wed., Dec. 3 at 8pm * $25 * Benefit for The Culver City Democratic Club!

Ronnie Jayne began her professional career performing at the popular Catskill Mountain Resorts and throughout the East Coast. Her versatile talents as a singer/pianist/comic and songwriter soon took her to
Las Vegas for a seven year run. She has been on several international tours and was a featured performer with Bob Hope. Her performances are always fun, funny and energetic!

Darryl Henriques * "all three Marx Brothers rolled into one." LA Times * "an amalgam of Lenny Bruce, Paul Krassner and Robin Williams: social commentary mixed with off-the-wall fantasies and philosophical speculations, and a razor sharp wit." SF Chronicle * Henriques describes his experiences on planet earth in general and the maze that is his mind in particular. As founder of The People's Think Tank (Where We Do Your Thinking for You!) Henriques reveals the hidden truths behind the headlines by channeling various characters from the not-so-disparate worlds of politics, religion and swimming.

Singing Political Satirist Roy Zimmerman's PEACENIK!
"a latter-day Tom Lehrer."
Los Angeles Times

Sat., Dec. 13 at 8:30pm * $25

Roy Zimmerman writes fiecely funny songs. Now he takes satirical aim at the absurdities of the Holidays. Happy "Christma-Hanu-Rama-Ka-Dona-Kwaanza"!

Zimmerman was the creator of the hilarious political satirical quartet The Foremen (Warner/ Reprise recording artists) and has been compared to Tom Lehrer in the LA Times and elsewhere. Roy (on his own or with The Foremen) has opened for Bill Maher, Dennis Miller, George Carlin and Paula Poundstone. His private arsenal of edgy musical delights includes hilarious send-ups of mega-mergers (Multi-National Anthem), the 60s (Psychedlic Relic), healthcare and politics. Roy's Creation Science 101 was YouTube's #1 pick last year and has garnered nearly a million hits!

Steinway Hall @ Fields Pianos * 12121 W. Pico Bl. (1 door w. of Bundy * Level P2)

Park free in lot! * RSVP to Jeannine Frank * Jeannine@FrankEntertainment.com

Here, there, everywhere!

Howard Rosenberg & Charles Feldman book signing & talk in the Palisades!

Thu., Nov. 20 * 7:30pm *  Village Books, Pacific Palisades * Witty Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Rosenberg & Feldman (formerly w/ CNN) speak & sign their new book, No Time No Time to Think: The Menace of Media Speed and the 24-Hour News Cycle. More at www.notimetothinkbook.com  & www.howardrosenberg.org

Keith van Straatan (producer of the delightful live stage version of What's My Line?) and Jim Newman have created a new live game show, WORD 1--a fast-paced phrase-guessing game with a unique twist you have to see to believe. Ariel Malek thanks you! So many of you offered wonderful referrals for piano tuners and technicians & even offered to cover the costs and lend a hand!

Last Friday Ariel's piano was restored by a terrific tecnician named Rich Smith. Ariel swears she's got a brand new piano and is thrilled to be able to enjoy playing again! Rich spent many hours tuning, examining and repairing -- all for a very, very special "friend in need" price! Please consider engaging his services! Contact him at Rich@RichSmith.com or (310) 621.5935. Thank you to Parlor Patron Lynda Jackson for recommending him -- and to our wonderful "anonymous donor angels" who picked up the tab!

Ariel Malek is a long-time Santa Monica resident, psychotherapist, Diane Keaton look-alike, single mom to a teenager, gardener-extraordinaire and community activist. In September, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 glioblastoma (the same aggressive brain cancer as Ted Kennedy). A website was created for her at http://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/607729/  for those who know her and/or wish to read her wonderful postings, offer rides or help if you have time, or simply contact her with your good wishes. Upbeat and appreciative of every good wish and kindness, Ariel loves hearing from friends old and new.

* Carla Zilbersmith update!  Many of you have been keeping up with Carla's blog entries (www.carlamuses.blogspot.com  ), which continues to amaze and inspire. Like Ariel, this beautiful, generous, gutsy mom of a gifted teenager/jazz singer/playwright/ professor/ comedienne diagnosed in January with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) is determined  to live life out loud even as this horrible disease takes its toll. Her almost daily blog entries are by turns (and often at once) darkly comic, uplifting, life affirming, painfully honest, almost unbearably descriptive -- and always worth the journey.  In a recent entry she muses on all the gifts people have sent her -- "While one can never have too many copies of Tuesdays with Morrie..."  She welcomes your visit to her site, your comments & letters. LA Times jazz critic Don Heckman's reviewed our September fundraiser at  http://irom.wordpress.com/2008/10/08/live-carla-zilbersmith/ & his pre-show feature on Carla and her new CD, Extraordinary Renditions is at http://irom.wordpress.com/2008/09/22/cd-review-carla-zilbersmith/ . You can purchase the CD on-line. (Extraordinary Renditions, Breathe Productions 2008)
