DEADLINE: SEPT. 20! Come one, come all, to an afternoon of new work by area screenwriters, read by actors. Writers, submit up to 1-12 pages of your best script (a short or a scene) that exhibits your brilliance. Any genre and style welcomed. Actors, come at 4 PM to hopefully get cast on the spot. SMITH's Labor Day at Venice Beach shimmer with a knowing sense of the world's darkness amid its brightnesses. J.D. SMITH's previous collections of poems include Settling for Beauty, and the edited anthology Northern Music: Poems About and Inspired by Glenn Gould. His poetry, fiction, essays, and reviews appear in journals in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. Born in Aurora, Illinois, he currently lives and works as an editor and writer in Washington, DC.   20 September, Thursday - 7:30 PM 3 WOMEN POETS: WANDA COLEMAN, MARIA MAZZIOTTI GILLAN, AMELIE FRANK Three women from diverse backgrounds take listeners into confessional and harrowing experiences that probe emotional highs and psychological depths. A rare chance to hear these brilliant poets in one place. Not to be missed! Known as "The L.A. Blueswoman," WANDA COLEMAN was born in the Watts community of Los Angeles in November 1946. Her 22 books includeBathwater Wine, winner of the 1999 Lenore Marshall Prize, andMercurochrome (2001), finalist for the National Book Awards. With the retirement of Black Sparrow Press (now Black Sparrow Books, imprint, David R. Godine, Inc.), her poetry, Ostinato Vamps (2003) and The World Falls Away(2011), continues to be published by the University of Pittsburgh Press. Other honors include Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, and California Arts Council awards (fiction, 1989; poetry, 2002). Twice finalist for Poet Laureate of California (2005, 2012), she was C.O.L.A.'s first literary fellow, Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles (2003-2004). An Emmy-winning scriptwriter (Days of Our Lives) and former columnist (Los Angeles Times magazine), she attributes her creative diversity to workshops and residencies, most notably Budd Schulberg's Watts Writers Workshop (1966), Beyond Baroque Literary Center (1968-75, selected for the George Drury Smith award, 2012), Djerassi Foundation (1989-90), and a Sea Change Cottage residency, Provincetown (2010). MARIA MAZZIOTTI GILLAN is a recipient of the 2011 Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award from Poets & Writers, and the 2008 American Book Award for her book, All That Lies Between Us (Guernica Editions). Her latest book is What We Pass On: Collected Poems 1980-2009 (Guernica Editions, 2010), and she has a book forthcoming in September 2012, The Place I Call Home (New York Quarterly Books). She is the founder /executive director of the Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College in Paterson, NJ, and editor of the Paterson Literary Review. She is also Director of the Creative Writing Program and Professor of Poetry at Binghamton University-SUNY. She has published fourteen books of poetry, including The Weather of Old Seasons (Cross-Cultural Communications), Where I Come From, Things My Mother Told Me, andItalian Women in Black Dresses (Guernica Editions).With her daughter, Jennifer, she is co-editor of four anthologies: Unsettling America, Identity Lessons, and Growing Up Ethnic in America (Penguin/Putnam) and Italian-American Writers on New Jersey (Rutgers). Los Angeles native AMÉLIE FRANK earned her B.A. in English from U.C. Irvine and set down her creative roots with the Iguana Café. In 1994, she and fellow Iguana poet Matthew Niblock founded The Sacred Beverage Press, producing the acclaimed literary journal Blue Satellite and books by such exceptional scribes as FrancEyE and The Carma Bums, among others. In addition to curating and hosting numerous poetry events and series, she has featured at most of the region's poetry venues, including the prestigious Los Angeles County Museum reading series. In 1999, she was named one of the L.A. Poetry Festival's six Newer Poets, was appointed a Co-Director of the Valley Contemporary Poets, and was elected to the Board of Trustees for Beyond Baroque. In 2002, she "herded hepcats" from San Luis Obispo to San Diego to pose for Mark Savage's The Big Picture, a historic documentary photograph of the largest single-event gathering of Southern California poets. Her efforts prompted California Governor Gray Davis to proclaim April as California Poetry Month.  21 September, Friday - 7:30 PM LECTURES FROM BEYOND: SYLVIA PLATH A discussion of Plath's work and life coupled with a multimedia presentation. Poets Linda Ravenswood and Ellyn Maybe will read selections from Plath's poetry and journals. Hosted by CARLYE ARCHIBEQUE. FREE admission.  22 September, Saturday - 7:00 PM ALL WATCHED OVER BY MACHINES OF LOVING GRACE GERRY FIALKA, host of 7 Dudley Cinema, teams with poets, dancers, and musicians to celebrate Richard Brautigan's fifth poetry publication, which envisions a world where cybernetics has advanced to a stage where it allows a return to the balance of nature and an elimination of the need for human labor. FREE admission.  22 September, Saturday - 9:00 PM BEYOND MUSIC - PEOPLE INSIDE ELECTRONICS PRESENTS TREES AND BRANCHES: CAGE, JARVINEN AND TEMPWERKS TEMPWERKS (CASEY ANDERSON, SCOTT CAZAN, ISAAC SCHANKLER, and ANDREW THOLL) is an ensemble originally created by composer ARTHUR JARVINEN for the performance of his musical compositions in the realm of live electronics, using "non-musical" devices such as Geiger counters, short wave radios, amplified strobe lights, and field recordings. This concert features the LA premiere of multiple works byJarvinen, presented alongside the early electronic music of JOHN CAGE and new original works by TEMPWERKS members.
